Yeah, they added / changed the shaders or something with the 4.0.0 congo river update. You can read about it on steam in the update notes:
QuoteApart from the new fishing location this Patch introduces some major graphic improvements.
Graphics optimization:- Graphics performance accelerated with memory requirements reduced.
- Game stability has been improved on large waterways such as Alaska, Amazonian Maze, and Akhtuba River.
Graphics improvements include:- New visual effects added,
- Sunset and sunrise graphics improved,
- Automatic tone compensation added,
- Automatic exposure compensation added.
The sunsets look really nice now, but for some cases, it's way too extreme. Especially in the night time, it's way too dark. Even with the headlamp, you can't see sh*t on Quanchkin Lake. haha.
For the PC version, they added an option in the video settings to disable what they call "post fx" with the 4.0.1 update:
Unfortunately, the console version(s) don't have the video settings tab at all. Which is a pity, as especially the PS4 version has gotten even more laggy than it was before. It's gotten to a point now where it's almost unplayable. Everytime you change spots, you gotta wait at least 5 seconds for the stuttering to stop, before you can even start doing anything. And the constant 3-4 second lags from previous versions of the game are still present.
It'd be nice if they could give us the option to turn off post fx for more performance, too. Maybe even some options to turn down other aspects of the graphics quality as well. I don't care much for all the glowing and lensflare effects and orange sunsets when I'm in a competition, I must say.
But I don't know if that's technically possible on consoles. Especially since I've not seen graphics options in other games, either. I guess they'd have to do different optimized versions for PS4 and PS5. And that's probably not gonna happen
My friends who are already playing it on PS5 said that the performance issues are gone there. And I do understand that the game is primarily optimized for PC, and PS4 can't hold up with the hardware requirements anymore. But it'd be nice to have the option to play the game like it used to be, and trade away some of the nice graphics for a more stable experience.

Hey guys,
Just a minor thing, that's been present for a while now:
If you travel to a lake, and don't have a license yet, the game pop ups a message telling you that it would be smart to buy one.
From there, you can press a button (I think it's X on PS4), and get sent to the in-game shop, where it shows you the two licenses for that specific lake (basic & advanced), that can be purchased.
If you do that with Alaska, it also sends you to the shop, but it doesn't apply the filter "Alaska" to the shop. It just shows every single license for every single lake. Which means you gotta scroll through the pages and find the one for Alaska.
As I said, just a minor thing. But it's been present for months now. Thought I'd finally report it so it can get fixed for everyones convenience

Please, can u guys look into this again? It's still not working for me for the spinning rods. As of now, one can only adjust the reeling speed once the lure is actually in the water.
It's not possible to adjust it before you do the cast, and it's not possible to adjust it while the lure is flying.
Casting rods work fine. Not too sure about match, feeder, and bottom rods, but it's not really as big of a matter on those, I guess

I think this was in the forums before. Somewhere. Can't find it.
Would be great to have an option to turn down the rodpod beeps separately. I think it's linked to the ambient sounds. And while I love to hear the wildlife around me while fishing, the rodpod beeping gets unbelievably annoying

Just a reminder. Differently colored buoys - maybe even flowing ones for the night and cloudy conditions (NL and quanchkin comes to mind) would be great!

Fwa members play multi-account in the same competition (when they have no luck).
Should be easy to fix. Drop the support team an email (support@fishingplanet.com), so they can forward it to the devs. From my experience, they don't read the forums much. If you also got screenshots of the comps & players in charge, I guess it's only a matter of days to ban them.
Thanks for sharing it with the community, though. Sad to hear that some people feel the need to harass other people. In a fishing game, of all places..

Thank you for your suggestions, Musette! Highly appreciated that you take the time to reply
Since I too have played both games for years, I at some point of course tried restarting the game - somewhere after 15 mins of no fish. Unfortunately that didn't help.
Also, I usually go for balanced setups, and pay attention to the max test, to make sure it's not overpowered. Judging from what I see on streams and YouTube, I am usually even underpowered - as I like to have a little fight with the fish. Even though this puts me in a disadvantage.
E.g. I still play spin the trout, dancing with Pike, and best 5 bass with a Jigwinner, Lucky Spot with a bass caster, etc. - while the top guys usually use way heavier setups.
The more I play both games though, and test things out, the more I get the impression that the line visibility doesn't matter at all. Except from maybe titanium leaders, where the difference is noticable. But I've seen people fishing for trophy SMB on falcon lake with a Zeus, going for small trout and Pike with a Thetis, etc.
Which is why - even though I would very much like the visibility to be a feature, I don't believe it to be implemented into the game. I am curious if you had different experiences?
Coming back to the competition(s): I am at this point really frustrated and curious about what it could be that I'm doing wrong, and would be happy about any suggestions.
I've had the same problem in the muskie topping event last time I've played it on TFM. In the whole 30 mins, I could not manage to catch a single muskie. No clear muskie, no regular muskie, no tiger muskie, nothing. Just 4 small Pike.
And it's not like I'm playing those events for the first time. I've played them for years. And it's ok if I can't catch enough fish, or not the right weight. But no fish at all?
I usually test my setups, spots and lures at the lakes before, and make sure they're good to go. I manage to catch a lot of target fish in the exact weather conditions and time frames. And then in the comp there's no fish at all?
I go through all the spots I know and gathered from friends and YT / twitch. I test different lures & colors. I even switch reels and lines, to make sure the visibility is not a factor. Still, I get no fish. I even spent 150 bucks on wifi repeaters and cable connections to reduce lag on my connection. And I know they changed a lot of spots and fish behaviour for some of the competitions (e.g. sturgeon & cats) over the last months and years.
Still, I get the impression that something is wrong on a technical level for some of the comps. And I am really wondering what it could be, and how one might be able to fix it.
The guys I play with have had similar issues, and usually say "it just is like that sometimes. You can throw whatever you want in the lake, and won't be able to catch anything."
Why though? Do you really get your chances rolled once you enter the competition, and if you're out of luck, you're out of luck?
P.S.: I'm playing on PS4, though. So too many running processes shouldn't really be an issue. I connected it via cable, so wifi shouldn't be an issue either - even though it's just a 50 MBit/s connection. The ping in other games is fine. I can play rocket league for 8 hours straight, with a decent 24ms ping and no issues. Destiny 2 works fine. I even took apart my console, cleaned it, and replaced the thermal paste to rule out overheating. Even freed up disk space and rebuild the database to rule that factor out.
Really kinda lost here

45 mins 1 fish total. WTF is wrong with this game?

2 months and this is still an issue..
So far I've lost a BC jerkbait and a x-series crankbait. Fix your goddamn game guys!

Try zooming in the view (RB on xbox) this allow you to control the drag and reel speed again
Thank you for the work-around!
Good stuff! (Once again it's the community that helps each other and the devs that don't seem to care..

I was just talking about this with my friends yesterday.. tackle box templates would be awesome!
It's super annoying to always unequip all the carp stuff (4 rods, 20 or more baits, carp hooks, weights, pva bags, etc.) when moving from the UK to somewhere else - and the other way around.
Just let us create different templates - e.g. "carp", "bass" etc. with all the needed gear, and have the game automatically re-pack our bags. Going for Salmon in Alaska? Guess you won't need those bass jigs. Going for carp in the UK? Click the template and take your boilies with you..
One could define templates by fish or by location or even by tournament.. I'd even pay baitcoins for those templates
They always keep adding more content to the game, and loads of different species to one lake, that need different setups. But the jackets are always too small. Especially the DLC jackets, that we paid for with real money, and are now rotting away in our home storages..

Actually, I don't like this idea at all.
When the timer runs out, the competition is done. It's as fair as it can get.
Why would somebody get an extra minute or two "overtime", just because he hooked a fish last minute - or even just had his line in the water last minute?
We all know the struggles of being only a couple of seconds too late with the winning fish. But, like I said, it's as fair as it can get. And if you look at the bright side: the adrenaline rush of getting the winning fish out of the water only two seconds BEFORE the timer runs out feels amazing. Even more so in a semi-final or final.

Well, no, nobody has done a sheet like that yet, as far as I know
But I think it would be hard to determine the variables for putting up a sheet like that. What lures would you use to compare the throwing distance on the different rods? Not all rods can equip the same lure. Also, not all reels can equip the same line. And not all reels work on all rods.. So the best you could get would be a tendency, and at best only a couple of metres difference. I think the amount of time that'd go into such a sheet is in no relation to the benefit it gives you.
There's just a few basics when it comes to casting distance. Like, longer rod, thinner line, heavier lure = more casting distance. Spinning rods are generally longer than casting rods, which is why they give you more casting distance. Braid line is the thinnest, which is why it is best when it comes to casting distance. And the medium spoons seem to be the most aerodynamic lures, which is why they cast out the furthest.
Then, there are some reels that are better than others when it comes to casting distance. Like the Espira reels (for spinning), and the Counsellor reels (for casting). Also, there are one or two rods that are exceptionally great as far as casting distance goes. Like, the JigWinner that you already mentioned, which I guess will get you the furthest. Also, the Thora is great, too.
I did a more detailed write-up on this topic a year ago, and mentioned some of my favourite far-caster setups. I guess it's cool if I just reference this here:
The feeder / bottom and carp reels / rods bring a whole new level to casting distance. They all cast out 70+ / 80+ m easy, so I guess you don't really needed to compare them, as this gets you anywhere you'd like to be on the lake

So it was a usual competition, not a custom?
Yep, in this case it was a usual competition.
I haven't played a lot of custom competitions so far. Only 2 or 3. Couldn't reproduce the error there.
Maybe in the next days I can try some more. If it happens for custom comps again, I'll upload another video.
-
Et voilà, here's a video of the incident.
At 4:08 I register for the competition (Big Red Fish in this case). At 11:27 I try to enter the competition.
When I go fishing, the game puts me in a random room, but obviously not the competition room.
When I go back into the menu, I can still change spots, but I can't change the chat room, because it won't let me point the controller at the chat room button with d-pad. Also, I can't select the "finish competition" button.
All in all, I can't do anything but re-start the game. After a restart, everything works as intended.
Hope this helps.

Had the same issue. I sent an email to support and apparently they are unable to see the issue in the game data. They requested a video of the problem.
When they work, they are fun. Hope they get it sorted.
Well Jamaica no problem
Next time we'll record a video before we enter. If it helps them bug fixing, that's the least we can do
Maybe also crowdfund a PS4 for the dev team. It might help. You never know.
Enjoy your weekend guys. Maybe see you in one of the next custom comps. Tight lines!

Well, while I was very excited for this update, I must say that it seems to be bugged on PS4..
When the competition starts, the counter counts down, you can enter, but if you start fishing, you're not in the competition. Not the right weather conditions, no top 10 table.. something is not working there.
Once you restart the game, you can correctly enter the competition, choose your spot, go to the lake, and you'll see the scores. But since the user generated comps are live (why?), you'll have already lost 8 minutes of your fishing time by then.
I really love this feature, and think it can bring so much to the game. But from my first impression it is still bugged.
Happened at Weeping Willow UK. Will do some more testing in the next days.
Thank you guys for putting it out. It'd be awesome if you could fix this, though. Thanks!
Edit: why can't we give the comps custom names? I don't understand that part of it. Also, it doesn't show the wind direction when I create a custom comp. The menu is a bit confusing here. It'd be awesome if you could make it easier to identify and set the specific conditions. Thanks!

(I think the game should at least tell you that the connection to the server was lost.
We only figured something was wrong after 10 minutes without a single bite / failed bite. Had to restart the game to even realize that it can't connect to the server at all.
Every other online game kicks you out immediately when the connection is lost. But noo, not fishing planet. It lets you fish for a while, lose some time, and then kicks you out after 15 or so minutes
)
