Tmif
I hadn't really tried fishing for uniques before. But at the end of a New York grinding trip with some shiners left I decided to try. By reading old posts on here and watching a couple of videos, I got this guy in 1 hour of gt. Keep posting those tips. They really do work!
Violentvole
Nice one fella, now you've had your first and seen that they're just as catchable as everything else they'll start racking up. I noticed the other day I hadn't had the uni Bluegill, went to Missouri and had it in less than 10 casts

Went to New York recently...for the first time ever lol. Caught several trophiy Pickerel and Sauger, but no Uni. Got bored with the quickness there. Uni's I still need, and have tried for: Bull Trout, Chain Pickerel, Rainbow Trout, Sauger, Spotted Bass, Stipped Bass & Whitefish. Uni's I still need, but have yet to try for: Blugill, Bowfin, Colorado Golden Trout & Smallmouth Buffalo. Three day weekend coming up. See how many I can check off the list. How many uni's are there...like 44 maybe? Give or take a two. So I have like 11 to go.
Violentvole
The uni Sauger just won't drop for me, but the uni Whitefish in Alberta is the one currently driving me nuts. Nobody seems to have caught it or knows where it is. Had loads of trophies to 7lb+. Like yourself Mitch, I think I need 10 or 11 to complete the list. I have a feeling the Whitefish will be the very last to make an appearance..

I have a feeling the Whitefish will be the very last to make an appearance.. The other side of the lake by the right hand campfire is the only place I can catch Whitefish. Caught several trophies on live bait and lures, but no Uni for me lol. I got in my kayak the other day, went to the other side, and staying maybe 30' to 40' from the bank, worked the entire shore line casting parallel to said shore line, up and back several times trying everything I had. But only caught them up around the right hand campfire. Those Sauger, at least for me, are a finicky bunch. I was having the best luck with trophies twitching a 1/2oz. jig head with a 5" worm. Not a big swooping twitch on speed 2, just a slow drag on speed 1, and twitch it off the bottom maybe a foot or two. Just enough to maintain a 3 dot twitch. I caught nothing but sauger one night from the shore by the rock wall. 60 ft out with worms and even minnows. No uni though. Twitching worked for me too.
Violentvole
Yep, worms work the best for me too. They definitely show a preference for certain colours on any given day. Spent many hours there and loads of baitcoins skipping between uni times, tried the nights too, but just can't get the uni. May have just talked myself into returning..
Violentvole
Just got the uni Whitefish! How long did it take? Maybe 12 real hours or so, a tough one. On a nymph of all things.

It was a packed house lol. Me, V.V., Walleyewhisperer, Tombomb, Red Onyx and a couple of V.V. buddies I had never met. It was a hootenanny lol. I think we managed to scare off one of V.V.'s buddies. He thought we were all crazy lol.

Violentvole
I blame Jim. I didn't once suggest anyone move their family to a tent in the garden or draw on their gentleman parts. I did have to spend the entire time fending off perverts who wanted to stare at my female avatars posterior though, despite wearing the Santa coat to make me look fat 1
Hate_ful
Lol Jim obviously
J.Mitchell WV
Ha Ha V.V. You brought it on yourself. Your the one who chose to go with a femal avitar lol. And yes, the Santa Coat does make you look fat, so there. So on a more serious note. This weekend I managed to knock 5 more uni's off my list, with the exception of Sunday, were I laid around on the couch for the biggest part of the day. Didn't feel good for some reason....wonder why lol. I'm having a bit of trouble with the Red Band Trout. Caught plenty of trophies. Mainly in the Trout Lair and Bridge Of Logs areas. I've seen uni's caught in the Trout Lair area, but not at the Bridge Of Logs. Anybody ever caught a uni at the Bridge? I hear it's a tough one to catch. A numbers game I would suppose. I've been catching them mostly on #1/0 narrow spoons and nano spinners. Don't know the first thing about catching one on live bait. Any suggestions would greatly appreciated. Tmif
I'm a little embarrassed to say I apparently caught one and don't remember it. Says I used the purple #1/0 narrow spoon. If I did it then it must be pretty random.

If u r still at NY, try taking few large minnows too with #4/0 hook. Perfect timing - Sunny days - 4pm-7pm Leader length -45inch Distance -157ft-166ft Once u catch a unique just change ur bait such as minnow to shiner or vice versa and at the end of the day u will have more then one. I can assure u that. Edited January 2, 2018 by Roy P.S
Tmif
I'm really not trying hard for uniques. I have started to pay attention to some of their times and if I remember I adjust accordingly. Currently in Fl. And making great money with the peacock and LMB. Tons of trophies but no uniques.
Violentvole
I'm struggling with the uni Redband too Jim, seems to be interspersed with the Rainbows on around a 25:1 ratio. Lots of trophy RB, but no uni. Annoyingly, I managed to get both Colorado unis in half an hour on Sunday, but now I'm wading through trophy Rainbows in Oregon like there's nothing else in the lake! On a happier note, I ticked off the final species in the game that I hadn't caught on the first day of the new year - a Redbreast sunfish lol. Violentvole
Went to Quanchkin, needed 4. Had 3 of them in 30 minutes lol. I then got sidetracked with some level 20s who needed help, so I spent an hour or two giving them advice and directing them here. I may....may, have caught a fish or two from exactly where I told them to fish, at the times I mentioned and on the gear I told them to use. But it was purely for demonstrative purposes, really tried to help these guys and they couldn't catch ( they couldn't skip time either so that didn't help ). Anyway, I got the uni channel, uni flathead and uni buffalo in less than 30 minutes - I'll take that. The uni spotted....hmmm, I can see that busting my nutsack. The remaining unis are decreasing ;-)

I used the yellow spinnerbait, think it was 28g 3/0, got it early morning right after the uni peacock using a fast stop and go. I found them much easier to get in louisiana
