I thought I had improved my lure retrieves but Alberta is confusing me. Should the lure go all the way down to the bottom?  Stop and go and twitch all look very strange. I broke down and got the Sport Heavy Casting package but it only casts 100 feet. Any help would be appreciated.

What line u r using and how much u have in ur reel.

As u have said u bought sports heavy pack which has cosmo cast and cyclone 6500 reel.

Casting distance varies on few things, such as

1. Line weight

2. Lure weight

3. Line length

4. Rod length

So plz provide us bit more info.. Ty

Also u can check it out there

Lures over 1 oz. 1.5 oz medium spoon. 300 ft of 40 lb flouro or 20 lb braid gets me no more than 120 feet. The Cosmocast 6'3" which i know longer rod = longer cast. But my main issue is what depth to retrieve at.

U don't need to use 40lbs setup for Alberta 20lb would do the trick.

As u r saying retrieve is the main thing for u now then it goes like this which worked for me best and m not a pro. I always play with my baits and lure, m more like experimenting kinda guy.

Spinners - straight slow as spinner does all the work. U can let it sink to bottom or just bit above it.

Crank - straight slow again.

Jig heads( Glow Shads)- twitching from bottom which got me my Uni laker.

Spoon- Stop n go for salmon.

Though most of the time I use float fishing for all the species out there.

I think V.V and Mitchell will help u bit further as they are forum pro around here also they are awesome .

They do know their stuff! My 20 lb braid almost got snapped by a 4 lb brook trout on the 2nd drag setting. Might be a bug. I need to go back to Florida!

Mate, I saw a lot of people using that low drag game, don't do it.

Lemme u tell u why, because u don't want to hurt ur reel that way while u can crank up that drag and bring that fish quickly rather then fighting with a small fish compared to ur setup.

By hurting ur reel means it's gonna cost u game cash to fix up ur reel. Every time when reel clicks there is chance of damaging ur reel unless u have a very big fish on and u r at Max capacity of reel then it's different thing, plz don't do it for smaller fish.

Remember line is much cheaper then repairing ur reel so damage that line instead of ur REEL.

Hey fella, what I find personally is that the lure indicator doesn't reflect what the lure is actually doing, especially on deeper venues like Alberta and Mich. Crankbaits in particular seem to behave very strangely on the indicator with anything over a 6 foot crank apparently diving to the deck and staying there. Spoons also appear to stay midwater and then suddenly dive to the deck halfway through a retrieve.

I simply ignore the indicator and continued fishing as normal, with no change to my catch rates. However, being a lifelong angler means I fully understand what my lure is doing at all times and depths ( regardless of type ), whereas non anglers who just play the game for fun may depend on that indicator.

So best advice I can give is to ignore what the indicator is telling you and listen to what your common sense is telling you that your lure is doing.

For lake trout I would let a 2oz spoon sink to the bottom.  Then stop and go retrieve on speed one.  Very slow was the key for me and I caught a ton of lake trout.  I never twitched the rod only slow stop and go retrieve.  I even caught a few uniques doing this.  Good luck!

Sounds like an unbalance set up. Before I go into a big spill on balanced setups, how familiar with this subject are you?

I guess not very. But I bought a pack that included the Cosmocast 6'3" and the Cyclone 6500 Sport. They matched those, not me. I just picked the line. I lost a lure on an insta snap where the rod and reel indicators were still blue. Not even gonna use it in Alberta with the size of the fish, not that it casts far enough to catch most fish there anyways.

Here's a link you can check out that has a lot of useful tips for building a balanced tackle set up. And a link to the  Fishing Planet Uber Sheet Project site that has some useful information regarding balanced combinations, and with a ton of "must" have information. If you haven't checked it out, give it looky see. Let me know if have any questions, and I'll be more than glad to help you as much as I can.
