richierob Posted August 10, 2020 Report Posted August 10, 2020 (edited) Anyone else having trouble with this? It's the only fish on the game I can't catch! Edited August 10, 2020 by richierob Quote
PH_Carpman99 Posted August 10, 2020 Report Posted August 10, 2020 No, not the last time I tried. The smallmouth buff (as you probably know) is a species of carp, think along those lines in regard to the bait used (and use small hooks ofc). What have you tried so far ? Quote
richierob Posted August 10, 2020 Author Report Posted August 10, 2020 (edited) Peas, corn, sweet peas, sweet corn, night crawlers, blood worms. I've caught what feels like hundreds of trophies but no unique. Fishing peak times in all weather types. No idea what I'm doing wrong. Edited August 10, 2020 by richierob Quote
PH_Carpman99 Posted August 11, 2020 Report Posted August 11, 2020 I'd suggest using corn on a #2 hook, Wide open swampy place or Way down south could be worth investigating (fishing the afternoon peak). GL. Quote
gunnies799 Posted August 11, 2020 Report Posted August 11, 2020 (edited) @richierob I do not want to contradict what Carpman99 said (he's helped me a LOT with getting uniques, so give it a try) but I also tried with smaller hooks and various baits for a while and couldn't get one. I then eventually got one with peas and a #1/0 hook on a float rig, during peak time in the afternoon (6pm-8pm) on the right hand side of the map (swampy open space). If you search for 'quanchkin unique smallmouth buffalo' on Youtube, I basically followed the instructions of the first suggestion in the list (don't know if I'm allowed to mention channel names here), except I didn't use bloodworms, but changed to peas. As a real life carp fisher, I had more confidence in peas or corn. I then eventually got one of 9.5Kg (I think on the second in-game day I tried). Good luck. PS. My nightmare at Quanchkin is the unique Channel Catfish. I've caught probably hundreds of trophies and commons all over the map. No luck yet. Edited August 11, 2020 by gunnies799 Quote
PH_Carpman99 Posted August 11, 2020 Report Posted August 11, 2020 The more viable options the better, what ever method works. As for uni channel cats, there is a small hole (visible on your map) quite close to the pelican hut that has produced quite a few for me. Quote

I've caught quite a few there, but no unique yet. I then tried further up from the hut, where the bass are and couldn't get one there either, same at the swampy place where the Blue Cats are. The next time I go to Quanchkin I will hit that hole you're referring to until I get one. I will NOT move on until I get it... Quote

That's the thing - I've seen the youtube clips as well and I copied everything they did. But I didn't get any uniques in 14 days - just a thousand trophies. I eventually caught it at upside down - near the warmouth spot! Somebody caught one while I was on the map and shared his mark with me. He caught it by mistake while fishing for warmouth. Took me less than 2 hours game time to catch it. No small ones or trophies first - just a load of bass and then suddenly a uni buffalo. Really odd. They must have killed the old spot. I caught my uni channel at the same place I caught the uni flathead. In the hole to the right at swampy open space. Edited August 11, 2020 by richierob Quote
richierob Posted August 11, 2020 Author Report Posted August 11, 2020 Same spot, later the same day... 1 Quote
gunnies799 Posted August 11, 2020 Report Posted August 11, 2020 (edited) @richierob I don't think they "killed" the old spot. I got mine not too long ago (maybe a bit over a month ago). But I'm glad you got it by mistake Thanks for the help with the Channel Catfish. I'm having the same struggles with it as you did with the Buffalo. Currently I'm still struggling at St. Croix to get the Unique Blue Cat and Tiger Muskie. I got all the spots and baits from multiple sources. When I EVENTUALLY get them I'll go back to Quanchkin in the hunt for the Channel. Sometimes it takes for ever to get a certain fish, while others on the same map keep getting them no problem. I can still remember how long I struggled to get a Unique Sauger at Emerald. That was like weeks..... At a stage I was even convinced that they were removed from the map by the developers. That was like weeks..... At a stage I was even convinced that they were removed from the map by the developers. I wish I knew how or why they do that. That buffalo spot is definitely dead for me at least. I first tried it 3 or 4 months ago and eventually gave up. I went back because it was the only fish in the game I hadn't caught (apart from the trophy blackfish at Alaska, but I give up on that one), and I had exactly the same problem. 12 days and no uniques. And it was on 2 different PCs, so it really makes no sense at all. The only other time I've had a similar problem was when I had to catch a unique muskie with a shad for a mission. I tried for 14 days before I realised the game wouldn't let me do it without a boat. When I got a boat I caught it in about 15 minutes. That was incredibly annoying, and I don't agree with it, but at least I understand it. Killing uni spots for some people but not others - I don't understand that at all. Quote
PH_Carpman99 Posted August 11, 2020 Report Posted August 11, 2020 Last time (July) I went to Kaniq the trophy Alaskan blackfish were biting thick and fast. Check out the leader board. Quote

Check out the leader board. You're kidding me? The last time I checked, 2 or 3 months ago, people were only catching them by mistake when going after bigger fish. And even then they were ridiculously rare. Are you telling me they bite just like any other fish now? In the standard blackfish spot? Quote
richierob Posted August 11, 2020 Author Report Posted August 11, 2020 Well would you look at that... Thanks man! Quote
PH_Carpman99 Posted August 11, 2020 Report Posted August 11, 2020 scratch that one from the to do list. Quote
gunnies799 Posted August 19, 2020 Report Posted August 19, 2020 @richierob Thanks, finally finished Quanchkin. Got the Unique Channel Cat on Frogs eventually after a few days and many many Flatheads and Blues. Now back to Saint Croix for me to finish off there Quote

I hate channel cats Posted July 31, 2024 Report Posted July 31, 2024 Day 24 of using all the youtube guides for locations, frogs, large cutbait etc., all times of day/night and 6/0 hooks and no unique channel cat. Tried the smallmouth too on the early days and no luck there either Quote
