Sandropen was nice enough to share his experience with catching the trophy. I spent several hours recreating the conditions to no avail. I even tried to just catch a regular blackfish on a lure. Nothing. There is not even a preferred lure bit on the species page. My only conclusion is that the devs purposefully made it near impossible, or it is broke and a bug causes it to be near impossible. I give up until I see evidence that catching one is more likely than seeing Bigfoot wielding Excalibur and riding a unicorn.

I have spent more time than I care to trying to catch this. Different spots, baits, and hook sizes. I have never caught a blackfish on a lure but i'll admit I haven't really tried because I value the little bit of sanity I have left. I have sent a message to Sandropen in hopes he takes mercy on me and will share any information.

It's the Sockeye/Bull Trout spot at Middle Earth.

Ok, this thing is killing me. I've fished the hell out of every rock in the vicinity both near and far bank. Tried baits and the spoon in the pic, like Tmif I can't get a single Blackfish from here, let alone the trophy.

I take my hat off to you for catching it Sandropen, even if it was an accidental capture. It may not be a big fish, but it's something I haven't caught so therefore I have to have it.

I'm there right now wading through Pinks, Chum and Bulls for that one tiny fish which refuses to make an appearance. Even worse, not a single rainy day for the next 2 weeks, although trophies generally aren't as fussy as unis in that regard.

Ah, the hell with it. Goodbye 14 baitcoins while I skip..

Just chatting to a player ( Mrjackthereal ) who could see me trying anything and everything and he said he had only seen one person have the trophy Blackfish, they lucked out on a crankbait.

He was glad to hear of a second and called it ' The Unicorn '.

I'm starting to agree with him. 900+ unis in and I can't get this tiny little bugger no matter what. I will, not leaving Alaska until I have it. Apologies for missing the Xmas event Jim 😉

No luck here either and probably won't go back until after the halloween event (Alaska wasn't one of the month long licenses I bought).

I did do a little research though and according to Alaska fish and game, the larger ones feed on each other and baby pike, so maybe I'll try some shads on a small jighead when I go back

I refuse to believe 'many trophy Blackfish bite' when I've only heard of 2 caught, despite playing since launch. Not just me: I've spent a lot of time online with a lot of the guys here and not one of us has had it. And we've all spent a lot of time in that spot lure fishing ( and bait fishing ) and caught everything else the game has to offer.

While it obviously exists, the only person here who has provided proof is Sandropen, and I take my hat off to him for catching it.

It's seemingly very rare, so to say 'many trophy Blackfish will bite' without verisimilitude, I find hard to swallow.

If you have indeed caught it, then I take my hat off to you also. Give us a pic or vid and you join the exalted club. But just saying you caught it, well, people say they've seen Elvis or were abducted by aliens everyday too..

I don't mean to be rude, I just find it hard to believe that when we have a pool of so many players who have put so much time in and never had it, you appear and state that it's down to us fishing at the wrong time.

You're not on the dev team are you? 😉

I've been bait fishing at a different spot from the Taming of the Kaniq peg for the last week with my new Hell Troy rod and this spot is loaded with suckers, trophy suckers, and blackfish. I'm sure I caught well over 1000 fish and still no trophy blackfish. One day early in the week I thought I had a chance at the 300 challenge, but fell short with 254. I had one of each salmon except for the pink, and one dolly. All the rest were suckers and blackfish at about 50/50. Then on Saturday I figured out how to quick strike in the current and caught 300 pretty easily.

I thought for sure I would get a trophy with so many blackfish in the area, but no. In 15 game days it didn't rain once and isn't going to, but I wonder if it has to be in order for them to make an appearance. I was using #6 & #8 hooks with everything from flies to leeches. When I tried a #4, the blackfish wouldn't bite at all. Plenty of trophy suckers though, I almost broke the 5 pound mark (4.898), but not a single trophy blackfish to be had, despite catching so many that were .400+ (my best this trip was .439).

I would've tried some small spoons and spinners, but didn't have any with me except for the bison spinner and a 1/4 oz. jighead with a couple of 2" shads. I gave up on those pretty quick after not getting a single bite and I'm leaving after work today when my license expires to grind up some travelling money for the Christmas event (spent 700K on Halloween).

If anyone wants to try this spot I marked where I'm standing with a buoy and would be happy to share. From the taming peg, turn left to about 7 o'clock from your original position and head that way. I'm just a little upstream from that log with a hump in it that extends out into the creek and there's Chinook activity directly across from where I'm standing.
