Maybe not as pointless as it seems, from Dennis_FP regarding patch 1.2.4:

Hello, Dear Anglers!
Patch Note  1.2.4  is a minor update that includes:

  • optimization of the inventory - now it works 2 times faster.
  • underwater items (details below).
  • snagging and bouncing lure and curving rod issue fix.
  • complex bugfix.

While we are working on the new European waterways and lots of new fish, here is a fun update for you in the meanwhile. As Fishing Planet is aimed to give you a fully realistic fishing experience now you can catch some underwater items and creatures, just like IRL.
Also underwater items are a part of a new complex feature - Mission System which will be released with the next update. In the future you will be able to use them to complete different tasks.
Underwater items do not influence the probability to catch fish in any way, you might get them only after the snag. Do not miss the chance to use them to explore the underwater world of the waterways.

Go and try your chances to catch one of the following items and creatures:

  • Turtle, Crayfish and Shells,

  • Variety types of Weed,

  • Other stuff as Boots, Plastic Bags, Sticks.

We also added a possibility to catch up lost lures.

You can either keep or release caught stuff (except for the creatures), if you decide to keep it, it will be visible in your inventory .

Enjoy and tight lines!

Interesting. Seemed kinda pointless when it was first announced but, if it does indeed contribute toward something new to do in the game ( however small ), it'll be welcome.

Any little thing will soften the wait for new venues I guess.

It won't be long V.V., before we can say we've caught all the Uni's, all the species, and now all the trash lmao!

That's what I'm going to strive for this weekend. To be the first Fishing Planet member to post that I've caught all the trash. Check it off the bucket list!

Lots of fishing time coming up Jim, I've taken redundancy and gonna live off the money for a few months. Which means I get to play on weekends when hopefully you're allowed to stay up later than 6pm 😉

As well as talking trash we get to catch it also. I hope it gives a good fight..

Is there a full list somewhere? I've only tried Fla so far but caught... Turtle; Crayfish; Dark/Hornwort; Sawgrass; Lily; Sledge; Bark; Stick; Backlash; Shell/s; Shoe; Boot; Rag; Bag. No lost lures caught yet, but on the Backlash catch pop up it says LOOT; curious why that one is the only one to say that?

I have not been keeping track of all the vegetation I've hooked. I have only fished Everglades and Quanchkin since the update. Each object takes a lure inventory slot so you will need space in your backpack on home to keep the items to complete the missions hinted at. I am sure someone in PS4 or Steam will put up a list of what can be caught where.

Ok, so now that I understand that these items take up actual inventory space, and we will eventually need these items to complete missions in the future, I'm a lot less enthusiastic about collecting trash. Reason: eventually I will have to buy inventory slots because I didn't go Sanford and Son on home storage. I can't help but think this was by design.

Same, insofar as my avidity goes. At first I wasn't enthused, then I read the patch note and thought, "Hey, this sounds all right," but now I find myself recanting on the latter. The inventory space issue is displeasing, especially when considering that same item underwater objects do not stack. Also, I'm not crazy about the loss of bait due to snags while float fishing. I realize that IRL you often lose your bait on a snag, however, this was not the case ingame, previous to the addition of these new items. While the idea of catching underwater items in itself is not entirely off-putting, these other aspects are. I don't want to sound too critical, though; my hope is that some of the kinks and flaws can be worked out, and when applied to future patches, it will be an enjoyable experience for all.

Well, we wondered at the time why they'd included the limit to home storage ( and purchasable extra storage ) when nobody had mentioned or asked for it.

It seemed a strange addition at the time, but now maybe the thought process behind such a move has become somewhat clearer.

I'll refrain from judgement until it becomes apparent what they mean about the trash being part of a future mission system.

I've still yet to catch any trash btw. Fish? Plenty. Trash? Zip. If only it was the same IRL 😉

At some point, your going to be able to take hornwart, sawgrass, shells & eye of crawfish and craft a potion to enchant your rod enabling you unlimited casting distance,(and stamina lol).

Or maybe take a shoe or boot along with a lilly and craft a potion that will allow you to walk on water.

Or maybe take a turtle, some bark, a stick and a bag, and craft a potion, that when taken during a competition, will not let your opponents sprint, and they will only be able to retrieve a lure on speed one for 15 minutes.

I caught a shell. I couldn't keep it because it requires space in the backpack.

Are they for real? I'm not going to empty 40 items out of my backpack for random shit that currently has no use.

And if I did, oh look, home storage has been limited. Clever.

And yet, we need these items apparently for some future mission setup. Very clever.
