wt313 Posted December 23, 2023 Report Posted December 23, 2023 As the title says, when the server-side as a lag spike, the CPU goes bonkers, freezes the computer and sometimes leads to system crash. Before I go further, I'm running this game on Linux, that being said, I see a lot of posts talking about that "Running..." window that seems to be the problem (image here) which makes me think Linux is not really the problem here. TL;DR: It looks like the game enters an endless loop when a lag happens. Linux or the hardware doesn't seem to be the problem Hardware: We are talking about a 32GB RAM, 4.2GHz x 12 threads CPU, M2 SDD and decent GPU - For reference, GTA V and Forza Horizon 5 run without a problem. OS/Platform theory: Granted, I'm running this game on Linux and Steam's Proton runner, which is not main the target of this game build, still, proton should crash first instead of the system, instead the game hangs a process (that I couldn't investigate since the system freezes), requiring all ressources available, for the sole purpose of what I assume is reconnecting to the server. While proton's API could be the problem, as said above, this also happens on Windows. Endless loop theory: While proton sure does what he can to run games, these games shouldn't be able to freeze it unless an operation is still running and didn't spit an error. Proton would crash before the whole system crashes, which leads me to the theory of an endless loop. (Developper talk) I'd assume the game is trying to reconnect to a closed/frozen socket and somehow manages to enter a endless loop, while I understand sync is required, I'd reather lose a fish than crash my whole computer. Again, I couldn't investigate if that leads to any memory leak but with 32GB of RAM... that would be a very big leak (which I'm not saying happens). Quote
